No-one ever said that navigating the postseason and winning a championship was easy, but there are some teams that have made a habit of making it appear much more difficult than it needs to be. The Washington Capitals have been one of the better team in hockey for several years now, and have in fact won the President’s Trophy for the past two seasons. For all that dominance and undeniable talent, they have always ended up looking very fragile once the playoffs begin. It’s the same old story this season, as they are once again making hard work of a series that they really should be winning quite easily. The Toronto Maple Leafs are an exciting young team that made a big leap forward this season, but they are still a long way from being the complete article. Watch the first 4 games of this series, though, and you would be hard pressed to determine which team was the top seed, and which was the #8. The series is tied at 2-2, and is set to head back to Washington on Friday night for a pivotal Game 5. Find the updated NHL betting predictions here.
After ending up on the wrong end of Wednesday night’s 115-111 loss, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder will look to avoid falling into an 0-3 hole when they host James Harden and the Houston Rockets in Game 3 on Friday night. Now, let’s find out if the electrifying Westbrook and the desperate Thunder can get the outright win at home or ATS cover, as well as checking the updated NBA betting spreads here.
NHL
Things are starting to look up for the Canadian teams in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. The Canadian clubs went 0-5 out of the gate but four of them rebounded to take 2-1 series leads, including the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs we set at +350 to win their series against the Stanley Cup favourite Washington Capitals initially, but now that Toronto has a 2-1 lead heading into Game 3, Washington has dropped to a -139 favourite with the Leafs at +100. The Leafs have been very good to their supporters with a win in Washington as a +213 underdog and another in Game 3 as a +132 underdog.
Montreal (-167), Ottawa (-182), and Edmonton (-147) are favourites to advance to the second round, while Calgary is a big +1200 underdog to beat Anaheim after falling behind 3-0 in that series. Edmonton will be a very popular bet in Game 4 after taking a 7-0 thrashing from the Sharks that evened the series at two games apiece. The Oilers opened as a -135 favourite for Game 5 back in Edmonton and 75 percent of bettors are backing the home team.
With the Capitals struggling and the Blackhawks on the verge of elimination, the Pittsburgh Penguins have taken over top spot on the Stanley Cup odds board. The reigning champs are now leading the pack at +350, ahead of St. Louis, Anaheim and Nashville – all of which are priced at +600. The Canadiens and Oilers are at +1100, while the Senators and Leafs are +1600. Calgary is last on the board at +10,000.
MLB
The Toronto Blue Jays own the worst record in the big leagues and their betting supporters are paying the price. The Jays’ terrible start already has the club’s supporters down more than 12 units and Toronto has dropped from sixth (+1200) on the World Series odds board before opening day all the way to the middle of the pack at +2800. It doesn’t look like it’s going to get any easier for the Jays, either. Battling a number of injuries to key players, Toronto now plays 13 of its next 16 games on the road. This may get worse before it gets better for Jays supporters.
NBA
The Toronto Raptors have evened their series with the Milwaukee Bucks at a game apiece and are set as -263 favourites to advance to the second round. The Raptors opened as a 1-point underdog for Game 3 in Milwaukee, but that line could move with about 67 percent of early bets backing Toronto. The Raps remain a longshot to win the NBA championship at +3300.
