NCAA March Madness

As bettors are busy cramming for the NCAA Tournament, oddsmakers are prepping for one of the busiest months of the year. The Tournament kicks off Thursday with the First Four to finalize the bracket and the Madness begins in earnest on Friday afternoon. Gonzaga, the Tournament favourite and overall No. 1 seed, has seen a lot of action since last week which has moved the Bulldogs from +229 to +189. The public can’t get enough of the Bulldogs and rightfully so. Gonzaga opened the season as the nation’s No. 1 team and never let go of that ranking all year. Now they’re looking to become the first unbeaten champion since 1976. So that’s why you aren’t getting much value on a ‘Zags futures bet. Just be careful with Gonzaga against the spread. With this club seeing such fat spreads, the Bulldogs were only 12-11 against the spread this year.

Baylor is next on the board at +371, followed by Michigan at +472, and Illinois at +492. There hasn’t been as much love for Michigan as we’d expected as their odds have shifted significantly after being around +390 last week. After that there’s a big jump to the next tier of teams including Iowa at +1500 and Oklahoma State and Alabama at +1900.

As usual, there is a lot of interest in the No. 5 vs. No. 12 matchups. These games have seen a lot of upsets over the years and this time around the betting public is all over the underdogs. All four No. 12 seeds are seeing at least 70 per cent of the pointspread handle to cover. No. 12 Winthrop is a 6.5-point underdog against Villanova, Oregon State is at +9 against Tennessee, Georgetown is +5.5 against Colorado, and UC Santa Barbara is +7 against Creighton. Georgetown is the most popular of all of the No. 12 seeds, seeing better than 80 per cent of early wagers. Winthrop is definitely worth a look, too. They’re a very deep team that should be able to run with the Wildcats. Plus, Villanova will be without starting point guard Collin Gilespie, which is a huge loss.
