The wait is over. Week 1 of the NFL season kicks off Thursday night with the reigning-champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosting the Dallas Cowboys. The Bucs look in good shape to be a contending team again with all 22 starters on both sides of the ball returning including, of course, quarterback Tom Brady. Oddsmakers opened with Tampa set as a 7-point favourite last month, but the Bucs are currently at -8 with more than 79 per cent of the early betting support. However, this is a club that is only 4-10-1 against the spread (ATS) recently as a home favourite.

Big things are expected again this year in Buffalo and the Bills open the year as 6.5-point favourites against Pittsburgh Steelers. Buffalo has covered the number in nine of its last 11 overall, so it’s no surprise to see three quarters of bets backing the Bills.

Over in the NFC, the Green Bay Packers are one of the week’s most popular bets as they face the New Orleans Saints as 4.5-point favourites. This game has been moved to Jacksonville as New Orleans is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Jameis Winston will take over at quarterback from Drew Brees after he retired in the offseason, while Aaron Rodgers is back with the Packers after speculation had him wanting out. Nearly 80 per cent of bets are coming in on Green Bay.

In the Sunday Night Football game, both the visiting Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Rams will showcase new starting quarterbacks. The Bears are turning over the ball to veteran Andy Dalton while rookie Justin Fields waits in the wings. Matthew Stafford is the new QB1 for Los Angeles. Bettors like the home club to cover -7.5 here.

The curtain closes on Week 1 with a Monday Night Football matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Las Vegas Raiders. This will be the first time the Raiders will play in front of a full stadium in Vegas, but oddsmakers have them set as 4.5-point underdogs. Bettors are on the Ravens, even though they suffered some tough injuries to J.K. Dobbins and Rashod Bateman in pre-season.

MLB

The Toronto Blue Jays aren’t giving up on their post-season dreams just yet. Heading into Wednesday’s action, the Jays have won six in a row and nine of their last 10 to creep within two games of and AL Wild Card spot. To get to the dance they’ll have to boot either the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox from the playoff picture. Toronto has two more dates with the Yankees in New York before playing four games against the woeful Orioles in Baltimore this weekend. The Jays are +100 underdogs tonight.
